Second Leg of Our Trip

April 3
Today we went to the beach.  it was the Indian Ocean.  The water was not freezing.  We played with kelp.  At night we went to a concert called I King.  I didn't really like the music.  There was a lot of Easter candy (thanks Kara and Niko) so I was happy.

April 4
Today we drove to White Lion Lodge.  It is basically little huts and the owner's name is Geri.  We could go on Safari.  When we got there Geri gave us washcloths.  I don't know why.  I really don't know.

April 5
Today we went on Safari.  We left in the morning and afternoon too.  We saw a white lion (no picture) and we saw hippos, elephants, thorny plants, wildebeest, giraffe (not a big five), and a cheetah hunting a kudu, Oryx, mongoose, ostrich, and a plant that the bushmen use as poison on their spearheads.  The food was great.

March 28
Today we got to Africa.  It was a really long plane ride.  Uuuuuugh.  Then we had to get on another plane.  After landing again Cara picked us up.  Then we had a car to the hotel.  We saw peoples’ houses made from scraps and mountains.
March 29
Today we went to Robben Island.  Robben Island was a prison.  One of the most famous people in Africa was held there.  It was Nelson Mandela.  It was kind of sad.  He is still alive today.  He made a book “The Walk of Freedom.”  He was one of the African Presidents.
That night I had a baby sitter.

March 30
Today we went to Cape Point. We saw penguins.  The penguins were cute.  Penguins are in Africa because the water from Antarctica got washed up.  Then we went to see a light house.  We rode a cable car.  We went in the Atlantic Ocean (not Indian Ocean).  I saw kelp.

 March 31
Today we went to Stellenbosch.  We went to a flea market.  Me and Mom bought a voodoo doll.  We also went to the Botanical Gardens.
That evening we went to a place called Excelsior.  There were wine grapes there.  I was the only one that wanted to go in the pool.  Instead we went on a farm truck.  Me, mom, and dad went in the back.  We went to the top of a mountain.  It was actually pretty fun.
They had the biggest ridgeback I’ve ever seen and two cats.

April 1
Today I petted a cheetah.  I kinda thought it wasn’t fun.  I don’t know why, but I thought it was kinda boring.  It was kinda a tired cheetah.  I would have preferred to see a cheetah running.
Then we went to have lunch. The cool part about lunch was we got to do it up in a tree house.  I ate some Sprinbok sausage.
Then we went to a bird show.  It had owls.  I actually got to hold one on my hand.  It’s talons touched my arm.  It really hurt!
That night we went to Bruver Raats house.  We played some pool.  When it was time to go I was conked out.

April 2
Today we went to an aquarium.  There was this really big kelp.  It was the biggest kelp on earth.  We saw a shark passing over my head.  It said over 169 chairs kill people, only 4 by sharks a year.  And 80% of South African kids haven’t seen the ocean.
Then we went to Table Mountain.  I got to ride in a gondola.  And I got to ride in a double decker bus to Table Mountain.
One of the things I learned is that the African people in school…Speak Afrikan, Read English, and Sing Dutch.

Preparations for South Africa

My dad, and mom, and I are going to Africa.  We are headed to Cape Town, South Africa, on March 27, 2011.  I took Marco Polo, the class monkey, on a short exploration to Split Rock before we left. I photographed Marco Polo next to the rushing water.
